Headaches & Migraines
Headaches are extremely common, with about 90% of people reporting the occurrence
of a headache at least once each year. Headaches causes are varied, and
include stress, the environment, illness or disease, poor posture, and
food allergies. They may not be an issue if they occur once in a while,
but can be problematic if they are chronic.
Migraine headaches, tension headaches, cluster headaches, and other
chronic headaches can be debilitating, causing patients to seek headache and migraine treatment.
In order for a doctor to effectively treat headaches, he or she must first
discover and address the
root cause of the patient's chronic headaches and migraines.
Additional causes of headaches, include drug reactions, TMJ, tight neck
muscles, low blood sugar, high blood pressure, stress, and fatigue. Most
chronic headache patients suffer from one of two types of headache: tension
headaches or migraine headaches. The third type of headache which often
drives people to tend to seek medical attention is the cluster headache,
which is somewhat similar to a migraine.
-
About 75% of headache sufferers experience tension headaches. Often described as a dull, achy feeling on one or both sides of the head,
like a tight band or a dull ache around the head or behind the eyes, these
headaches tend to start slowly and last anywhere from minutes to days.
They're often the result of stress in the spine and muscles of the
back and neck, so effective treatment can include
chiropractic care and trigger point injections.
-
Women comprise about 75% of migraine sufferers, and migraine headaches
affect about 25 million people in the United States each year. In addition to being intense and throbbing headaches, migraines often
include nausea, sensitivity to light and noise, and visual symptoms like
flashing lights. Migraines can have a genetic component, but the primary
cause of a migraine is changing blood flow in the brain. Sometimes, migraines
can be avoided by eliminating certain "triggers". Treatment,
therefore, should include nutritional counseling, to help patients identify
and avoid foods that can trigger migraine headache symptoms. Other helpful
treatment options include chiropractic adjustment, massage therapy, and
trigger point therapy.
-
Brief, excruciating headaches, cluster headaches typically occur on one
side of the head behind the eyes. About 1 million people in the United States, primarily men, are impacted
by cluster headaches, which are the only type of headache that usually
occurs at night. They are similar to migraine headaches, in that they
are related to blood flow in the brain. Interestingly, cluster headaches
tend to occur one or more times a day for several days, and then might
not occur again for months or even years.
