Information on Spinal Decompression

Posted By Georgia Accident Rehab Centers || 28-Sep-2015

Persons experiencing mild to chronic neck and back pain can benefit from spinal decompression. This method is used to treat individuals who have been injured in sports-related accidents, car accidents, and slip and fall accidents. This procedure can also help those who experience pain from average daily activities.Additionally, spinal decompression is used to treat some of the following injuries:

  • Herniated disks
  • Bulging disks
  • Worn spinal joints
  • Injured spinal nerve roots
  • Diseased spinal nerve roots
  • Degenerative disk diseases

The Spinal Decompression Process

Spinal decompression is designed to stretch the spine by reversing the force and motion that the spine normally sustains throughout the day. Below is the step-by-step process of a spinal decompression procedure:

  1. The chiropractor will have the patient lie face-up or face-down. This will depend on the patient’s condition.
  2. The chiropractor will place one harness around the patient’s pelvis and another around the patient’s trunk.
  3. Using a computer-operated table, the chiropractor will stretch the patient’s spine according to the patient’s medical condition and needs.
  4. The chiropractor will return the patient to a normal position.

In most cases, these procedures last for about 30 minutes to an hour. Of course, this depends on the patient’s medical needs and the injury the patient has suffered.
